The hostel booking trick I stumbled into in Lisbon saved me $40 a night

I realized if I booked directly through the hostel's own website instead of Hostelworld or Booking.com, they gave me a 15% discount and waived the booking fee. Has anyone else noticed properties quietly offering better rates when you skip the middleman?

Read somewhere that a lot of hostels actually prefer direct bookings because they don't have to pay commission to those booking sites. That 15-20% cut adds up, so passing some of it back to customers makes sense. Plus you get better customer service when something goes wrong since you're dealing with them directly.

Wait 15% off AND waived fees? That's actually insane.
