The $20 laundry bag that replaced my checked luggage fee

I compared paying $35 each way for a checked bag on a Seattle trip to cramming 10 days of clothes into a mesh laundry bag and carrying it on. The bag cost me $20 at a camping store and I fit more than I thought, plus I skipped the baggage carousel entirely. Has anyone else tried this trick with a duffel or backpack instead?
