Spent $80 on a proper travel towel and it actually paid for itself in hostel savings

I used to just bring a regular bath towel from home on trips. It took forever to dry and I'd get charged $5 every time I wanted a fresh one at hostels. Bought one of those lightweight quick-dry ones before a 3 week trip through Thailand last summer. Dried in like 2 hours on my bunk, never paid for a towel rental once. Has anyone else found a random item that saved them more than it cost?

My sister actually bought me one of those for my birthday a few years ago and I was so skeptical. I remember rolling my eyes thinking it was just some overpriced piece of fabric. But man did it come in clutch during a week long trip to Paris when I stayed at a hostel near Montmartre. That thing dried out in no time hanging off the end of my bunk bed and I dodged like 35 euros in towel fees. It also packed down super tiny in my backpack which was a game changer since I didn't have to sacrifice space for other stuff. I totally get why you feel like it paid for itself it really does the math on those rental costs adds up fast.

I actually read a blog post from some guy who went backpacking through SE Asia for 6 months and swore by those microfiber towels he said he saved like $200 in rental fees. @nancy475 totally nailed it about the space savings too, I always forget how bulky regular towels are till I try to cram one in a pack.
