Pro tip: Book the first flight out, not the cheap red eye

I used to grab the 1am flight to save $40, then realized I was paying $60 in extra airport meals and coffee the next day just to function. Last trip to Chicago, I paid $15 more for a 7am departure and landed fresh enough to hit the free museum day without buying snacks. Anyone else notice the red eye tax sneaks up on a budget?
