My cousin's 'take the night bus in Bangkok' advice was a disaster
He swore the 2 AM VIP bus from Khao San to Chiang Mai would save me $30, but I ended up paying $50 for a hostel room just to recover from the ride. Has anyone actually had a good experience with overnight buses in Southeast Asia, or is my cousin just cursed?}

Take the right company and set expectations first. I've done the sleeper buses dozens of times and slept like a baby, but the VIP ones are a coin flip unless you book with NCA or Sombat.
