My aunt in Denver told me I was overpaying for hostels and she was right after I checked a local guesthouse for $28 a night
I spent an hour defending Hostelworld to her before looking up a place she recommended near the light rail and it saved me $15 a night plus a free breakfast, has anyone else found hidden cheap stays through family tips?

Man, that's so frustrating when you realize you've been overpaying the whole time! I had almost the exact same thing happen with my cousin in Portland who told me to skip the big booking sites and just call a place near a bus stop. It ended up being $22 a night with a shared kitchen which was like half what I was paying before. Family always seems to know the random local spots that tourists never find on their own. I'm glad your aunt looked out for you, those hidden savings feel so good when you stumble on them.
