Lost $120 on a "discounted" tour package that didn't exist

Booked a supposed 3-day Milan city pass through a random Instagram ad last month. The site looked legit, had reviews and everything, but the voucher code never worked. When I called the number listed, it was disconnected and the email bounced back. Checked my bank statement and the charge went through to some name in the Philippines. Has anyone else fallen for these flashy travel ads, and how do you spot them before paying?

I've gotten scammed by a fake "sunrise yoga retreat" that turned out to be a guy's backyard, so at least we're both learning the hard way...
