Just remembered getting stuck in a Berlin train station with no cash back in 2015

I was trying to buy a ticket from a machine that only took coins, and I had a twenty euro note. A local guy saw me and just handed me the exact change, about 3.80, and refused to take my note. That was the day I started always keeping a small coin purse separate from my wallet. Do you still carry local cash as a backup, or is everything on your phone now?

Oh man, that's the BEST kind of travel moment! I still keep a little emergency cash in my bag because my phone died once at a market.

Honestly, my backup cash is more of a museum piece at this point. I keep a wrinkled five in my phone case from like 2019, and I'm pretty sure it's fused to the plastic. The one time I needed it, I was too embarrassed to hand over this crusty old bill. I'm all digital until my battery hits 1%, then I'm just a guy patting all his pockets looking for relics.
