Just realized hostel kitchen hours are the real budget killer

I was traveling through Barcelona last month and thought I was saving big by booking a cheap hostel for €18 a night. But I kept blowing my food budget because the kitchen closed at 9 PM sharp and I'd get back late from sightseeing. Ended up buying overpriced tapas and sandwiches for 3 straight days until I finally checked the hostel rules online. Turns out there was a 24 hour kitchen 2 blocks away for the same price but I just booked the first one I saw. Now I always check kitchen hours and grocery store locations before I pick a place to stay. Has anyone else gotten burned by hostel kitchen schedules?

@willow114 I mean come on, blowing a food budget over a hostel kitchen closing at 9 PM? That's kind of on you for not reading the rules before you booked it. I've stayed in probably 50 hostels and like half of them had kitchens that shut down early or had weird hours. It's not some big secret. You just gotta do a little digging before you hand over your card. I remember one time I got stuck in a place in Madrid where the kitchen locked at 8 PM and I ended up eating gas station chips for dinner three nights in a row. It sucked but I didn't blame the hostel, I blamed myself for being lazy about checking. So yeah, you got burned but it's not that deep. Just learn from it and move on.

You might have been looking at the wrong hostel altogether. Most places in Barcelona actually have a 24 hour kitchen, so it sounds like you just got unlucky with the one you picked. Next time look for ones that mention "guest kitchen" in the reviews so you know for sure what you're getting into.

Right? I've had that exact thing happen in Seville. Now I always check reviews for "kitchen hours" before I even look at the room. And @the_tara is right too, it's not always obvious.
