I was all about hostels until a 3-night Airbnb in Lisbon changed my mind
For years I swore by hostels for budget travel, like $15 a night in Barcelona cheap. But last month I tried a private room Airbnb in Lisbon's Alfama district for $45 a night split with a friend. It had a tiny kitchen where we cooked pasta and eggs, saved like $30 on eating out over 3 days. The kicker was no snoring roommates and a real door to lock. I guess the extra $30 a night was worth it for sleep and food savings. Has anyone else switched from dorms to private rentals for the same reason?

Snoring roommates are why I now vacation alone.

So did they actually wake you up every single night or was it more like you couldn't fall asleep in the first place? Because I feel like those are two totally different levels of awful. If you're already awake and can't get back to sleep because the snoring is that loud, that's a whole different kind of torture. I once had a roommate who would snore so bad the walls vibrated, I would just lay there counting down the hours until the sun came up. It really messes with your head after a few weeks of that.

Nah, you're on the money. That exact same thing happened to me with a guy named Dave in a shared house. I'd be dead tired at midnight but the snoring would kick in before I even closed my eyes, leaving me to stare at the ceiling for hours until sunrise. It's a special kind of hell when you know you're going to be exhausted but can't do a damn thing about it.
