I booked a flight with a 23 hour layover on purpose to see a city for free.
The airline didn't charge extra, so I got a full day in Lisbon for the price of a hostel bed. But I was so tired from the flight I barely enjoyed it. Is a free stopover ever worth the jet lag?

Hold up, you spent 23 hours in Lisbon and didn't book a room? I'm with jakel36 on this one, that's the move. I tried to power through a long layover in Amsterdam once and just stared at a canal for forty minutes like it was a screensaver. You need a real bed, not an airport chair, or you're just paying in brain fog.

Notice how we often trade money for time, but then waste that time being too tired to use it. jakel36 has the right idea about the hotel room, because a free stopover only works if you actually have the energy to see the place. The cheap option sometimes costs you the whole experience.

What was your plan for dealing with the tiredness? Did you try to power through or just accept a slow day? I've done that before and the trick seems to be booking a hotel room for a proper nap, even if it costs a bit. Otherwise you're just a zombie looking at cool stuff.
