Hotel front desk guy in Tucson saved me $80 with one question

Last spring I was booking a last minute room in Tucson and the clerk asked if I had AAA. I said no, but he checked for an AARP discount anyway and knocked $80 off the weekend rate. He told me to always ask for 'unadvertised rates' at check-in, not online, because the front desk has more flexibility. Has anyone else gotten a surprise discount just by talking to a human instead of an app?
