Hotel breakfast vs grocery store breakfast on a 10 day trip to Portland
Used to always book hotels with free breakfast to save money, but last month I realized I was paying $30 more a night for rooms I didn't like just for eggs and toast. Now I hit a grocery store for yogurt and granola for $12 total and eat in my room. Which side do you lean on for cutting food costs when traveling?

Yeah @dianal94 hit it. Grocery store wins every time for me in Portland.

Yeah the "free breakfast" upcharge is real. I did the math once and realized I was basically paying $28 for a sad muffin and some runny eggs. The bigger thing I've noticed is how often we pay for convenience without thinking about it, like grabbing lunch out every day at work versus meal prepping. Your grocery store idea is basically the same principle, just applied to travel. For me it depends on the trip though, if I'm with a group of friends a hotel breakfast can be a nice way to start the day together, but solo I'd rather save that cash for a good dinner somewhere local.
