Hostel vs budget hotel in Bangkok, I picked wrong and paid for it

Last month I booked a $9/night hostel in Bangkok thinking I'd save cash for food. Bad move. The AC broke at midnight, someone snored like a lawnmower, and I paid $7 for a tuk-tuk to a 7-Eleven just to breathe. Next night I switched to a $22 budget hotel near the river, got a private room with working AC and a free breakfast. That extra $13 saved my whole trip. Anyone else learned the hard way that cheap sleeps in hot cities are a trap?

I once paid for "free air conditioning" in a hostel and got a WINDOW, so yeah, I feel your pain.
