Hostel cancellation rules vs saving $30, which side are you on?

Booked a non-refundable hostel in Barcelona for 3 nights. Found a better deal in Lisbon and wanted to switch. Hostel said no refunds, period. Lost $45 but learned my lesson about flex rates. Now I always check the cancellation policy before booking. My buddy says non-refundable is fine if you're sure. I say the extra $7 a night is worth the peace of mind. What do you do when plans shift?

Damn, that's rough but honestly kinda woke me up too. Used to book the cheapest rate every time and just assume nothing would change, now I always eat the extra few bucks for flex. Learned that one the hard way too, $30 is nothing compared to the headache of being stuck with a plan you don't even want anymore.
