Heard a guy at the hostel in Prague say booking flights 54 days out is the magic number, not 6 weeks like everyone claims

I checked his stat against my last 8 flights and my cheapest ticket was booked at 47 days, but my most expensive was at 52 days, so is that 54 day rule just luck or does someone have data to back it up?

How many flights have you actually checked though? I flew to Bangkok last year at 48 days out and paid $680, then my buddy booked the SAME flight at 64 days and got it for $420. That 54 day thing is just people trying to sound smart with a random number they heard. Airlines change prices every dang hour based on how many seats are left and what day of the week it is. Honestly if you really want the best deal just set up a price alert and jump when it drops below your comfort zone, not some nonsense rule some guy made up in a hostel.

Counted my own flights and the 54 day window hit the lowest price 6 out of 9 times.

Wait, are you actually tracking flight prices that closely? I mean I get the idea behind the 54 day thing but the_adam's right about Bangkok being all over the place. My last trip to Mexico City I snagged a ticket at 32 days out for $290, then a month later the same route was $450 at 55 days. It's mostly just luck and how bad the airline needs to fill seats that day. Set a price alert and stop overthinking this stuff.
