Had to choose between a hostel and a Couchsurfing stay in Barcelona last month

I was in Barcelona for 5 days and the hostel was going to cost me $180 total but a local offered me their couch for free. I went with the free option and ended up getting a personal walking tour of the Gothic Quarter and saved enough for two nice dinners. Has anyone else had a Couchsurfing experience that actually worked out better than paying for a room?

Blew it on my first Couchsurfing trip in Berlin - showed up with a six pack of cheap beer and my host turned out to be a strict vegan who didn't drink. Had to sleep on a beanbag chair listening to him play acoustic guitar for two hours. Still saved like 80 bucks though so I guess I won in the end.
