Everybody raves about hostels in Lisbon but I paid 18 euros a night for a room in a family-run pension 10 minutes from the waterfront in Porto and got home-cooked breakfast included.

Does anyone else feel like the so-called 'budget travel' spots people recommend online are just overpriced dorms with a cool Instagram filter?

Used to be a total hostel snob myself but Porto definitely changed my mind about that... those hidden family-run spots are way more worth it.

Wait hold up, you were a hostel snob AND you changed your mind? That's like me saying I suddenly started liking pineapple on pizza after hating it for 20 years. Those family-run spots better be serving some SERIOUSLY good breakfast to pull off that kind of turnaround. Maybe I need to give Porto another shot with this new info.
