The slow shift away from making soup from scratch
I grew up watching my mom make soup from a leftover chicken carcass and random veggies, and it tasted better than anything. Now I see people in the grocery store buying $5 cans of soup full of salt when a whole chicken is like $8 and can feed you for three days. When did grabbing a can become easier than just boiling some bones and carrot scraps?

Blame it on the 24 hour news cycle and the death of the home cooked meal, I guess. I swear half the people buying that canned stuff wouldn't know a chicken carcass from a hubcap if it bit them. But hey, at least the sodium content will keep them preserved for the apocalypse, right?

Nah man you're totally right, it's like people forgot what real food even looks like lol. I saw a lady at the store yesterday grabbing a dozen cans of that condensed soup stuff and I was just thinking, does she know she could make way better for half the price with real ingredients? But honestly I can't even blame her too much because the system is set up to make us all helpless in the kitchen. My grandma used to boil a chicken carcass for stock and make it last a week, but now everyone's trained to think a microwave button is the same as cooking. The sodium comment killed me though lmao, that's the real kicker isn't it. At least we'll all be well preserved when the power goes out and we're the ones who actually know what to do with a real chicken.

...and the thing is, I feel like we've all been gaslit into thinking canned soup is just as good. @allen.charlie you're spot on about the system making us helpless. My neighbor actually bragged to me last week about how she "cooked" for a whole week using just her Instant Pot and some packets. I was like, bless your heart but that's not cooking, that's reconstituting. I tried making a batch of chicken noodle from scratch for her and she looked at me like I was doing witchcraft. All I did was throw a chicken in water with some celery tops and wait. It's not rocket science, people just forgot their grandmas knew what they were doing.
