Staring at the discount meat section gave me a moral pause

I was at the grocery store last night, looking for something cheap to make for dinner. I spotted some ground beef that was marked way down because it was hitting its sell-by date. My budget was tight, so it seemed like a win (you know, saving money and all). But then I thought about how stores often throw away perfectly good food, and buying this might just be a band-aid on a bigger problem. I bought it anyway and made tacos, but I felt kinda guilty the whole time. Is it better to buy these items to reduce waste, or does it let companies avoid fixing their donation systems? Curious what you all think when you're in a similar spot.

Ugh, I'm totally on the other side of this. Buying that marked-down meat just tells the store their system works. It's a tiny fix for you, but it lets them off the hook for bigger solutions. If everyone kept buying the almost-old stuff, why would they ever start donating it or ordering less to begin with? You're basically cleaning up their mess for them with your own money. It feels like helping, but it's just helping them avoid real change.

Last week I got ground turkey for 30% off and felt the same way. I see where @the_jana is coming from about letting stores off the hook, but my rent check doesn't care about their donation system. I bought it, made chili, and froze half. For me, saving that eight dollars matters more right now. The system is broken, but I can't fix it by turning down food I can actually afford.
