Pro tip: stop buying pre-shredded cheese for budget meals
I grabbed a bag of shredded cheddar last week for $3.50 and it clumped up so bad it ruined my nachos. The anti-caking powder they use makes it melt weird and adds nothing. I switched to a block of the same cheese for $2.80 and grated it myself in 2 minutes. Way cheaper and actually melts smooth. Anyone else ditch pre-shredded and notice a difference?

@bettywood Exactly. Block cheese saved my mac too. Way worth the 2 minutes.

I actually heard the clumping issue is because they coat the shreds with potato starch and cellulose to stop them sticking together in the bag, which just messes with the melt. Once I switched to blocks, my mac and cheese turned out way creamier without that weird powdery texture. Did you find the grating time makes it worth the savings even on busy weeknights?
