Just realized those 'dollar store' spices are actually fine

I always thought you had to spend more for good flavor, but my $1 jar of garlic powder from Family Dollar made my chili taste just as good as the $6 brand. Has anyone else tried the cheap spices and been surprised?

Wait, hold on. My experience is the total opposite (sorry). That dollar store garlic powder is basically dust. I tried it once and it had zero punch. For chili, I need the strong stuff from the ethnic market, the kind that actually smells like something. The cheap one just made my food taste bland.

Yeah, the "basically dust" part is too real. You're right, @adam731. That cheap stuff just vanishes. It's like they forgot the garlic part. I bought some once and had to use half the jar to get any flavor at all. My chili tasted like sad beans. Never again. The good powder hits you right when you open the bag.

My local Kroger brand is the worst offender. It's literally just scented talc. I had to use three tablespoons in a pot of soup last week. The good stuff from the Asian grocery, you only need half a teaspoon. It's a total scam buying the weak powder.
