I spent 3 hours trying to make lentils taste good and gave up

Ngl everyone raves about lentils as a cheap protein but after simmering them with onions garlic and a whole jar of tomato paste they still tasted like dirt. Anybody else just accept that some budget foods are not worth the time?

...and that's exactly why I switched to red lentils for dal. They break down into mush so you don't even notice the dirt flavor. My mom made me eat plain brown lentils for years and I swore I'd never touch them again, but then I tried this lentil soup recipe from a guy in Bangladesh and it was actually good. Had to track down this spice called asafoetida at a Indian grocery store an hour away though.

The whole "dirt flavor" thing is too real. I swear brown lentils taste like I'm eating a spoonful of potting soil. But that asafoetida is a game changer, I used to think it smelled like rotten feet until I actually cooked with it. @kelly385 you made me remember the time I tried to impress a date with lentil soup and forgot to rinse the lentils first. Ended up with gritty soup and zero second date. At least you got a good recipe out of it.
