How many tries does it take to cook dry beans without soaking? About 11 for me

I got tired of buying canned beans for every meal, so I decided to switch to dried pintos to save money. Figured you just boil them longer, right? Wrong. The first batch came out like little rocks, second batch was mush, and it took me about 11 tries over two months to finally nail the timing and salt thing. Turns out adding acid too early is the killer and my stove runs hot, so every recipe online was off by 20 minutes. Anyone else struggle with this or am I just the only one who didn't learn this in basic cooking class?
