Tried a mortar mixer on a job in Tucson last month and honestly prefer mixing by hand.
Everyone raves about saving time with a machine but I spent more time cleaning the drum than I would have just blending it myself, has anyone else found that the old way still works better for small crews?

Got a buddy who swears by those paddle mixers on a drill for small batches, tried it once and the thing almost yanked my arm off lol. Spent the next hour picking mortar out of my gloves and tool belt, definitely not worth the hassle. Hand mixing lets you feel the consistency way better too, you can tell when it's just right without guessing. Plus you don't need to haul a generator or extension cords around for a 4 bag job, seems like overkill to me.

Read somewhere that those paddle mixers can actually burn out a cheap drill too, not just your arm.
