Took me 8 years to realize I was buttering my brick wrong on cold mornings
Was laying a garden wall in Rochester last October and the mortar kept sliding off the frog, so I watched an old guy on the crew just tap his brick twice on the board before setting it. Turned out I was dipping my trowel too deep and dragging wet mix up the face instead of getting a clean roll, which is why my joints always looked soupy by lunch. Anyone else switch up their buttering grip after watching somebody else work?
Learned more from watching that old guy tap his brick twice than from eight years of figuring it out solo, which says a lot about how we all pick up bad habits and just roll with them. Honestly the soupy joints by lunch thing hit home, been there way too many times. Guess the real lesson is to watch the quiet old dudes on site more often instead of thinking you already know it all.
