Told a homeowner in Cleveland last month I'd bed the first course in 20 minutes, the mortar had other plans
Set 14 blocks on a fresh bed that started going off in under 8 minutes because I mixed it too hot in the July heat, and I had to tear the whole run out and relay it the next morning, so has anyone found a mix ratio that actually holds up in 90 degree weather?
Buddy of mine ran into the same thing down in Cincy, he started adding a little ice water to the mix and it bought him maybe 5 extra minutes, but you gotta be careful cause too much water kills the strength. What really saved him was just setting up a shade tarp over the work area and keeping the blocks themselves wet, not soaked, just damp. He also started mixing smaller batches, like half a wheelbarrow at a time, so he wasn't stuck with a pile going off on him. Takes longer to get through the day but at least you're not tearing out a whole run at 7am the next morning.
