Thought layout lasers were a gimmick until a guy on my crew used one on a 40 foot wall in Tulsa
When the boss brought in a $500 laser level last spring I figured it was just another toy that would sit in the truck. Then we did a 40 foot block wall out in Tulsa and the guy running it had every course dead level without a single string line. I still keep my line blocks handy for small stuff, but I had to admit the thing earns its spot on big runs. Anybody else switch over for long walls or do you still trust a string and a story pole?
I read a thread on a masonry forum a while back where a guy did a side by side test on a 60 foot run. He set up his laser on one end and ran string on the other, and by course ten the string had sagged enough to throw him off a quarter inch while the laser line never moved. That sold me more than any salesman ever could. String still has its place when you are working in tight spots or the wind is not a factor, but on a long wall the sag and the stretch will get you every time. The old timers I know swear by a story pole and I get it, that is how they were taught. But I will take the laser on anything over 20 feet from now on.
