The new guy on our crew in Boise last week tried to mix mortar with a drill and a paint paddle.

I saw him doing it and had to stop him right there. That mix would have been full of air pockets and failed in a year. Three years ago on a job in Spokane, we had to tear out a whole garden wall because someone did that exact thing. It cost the contractor over $5,000 in rework. You need a proper mortar mixer, period, even for small batches. It's not a suggestion, it's the only way to get a consistent bond. Has anyone else had to fix a mess like that?

Had a guy do that on a patio job once. Made him mix the whole batch over by hand with a hoe.

Man, that's rough. My cousin did something similar with a bad concrete pour for his shed floor. Whole thing cracked within a year.

My neighbor tried hand mixing once too, it did not go great.
