PSA: A chat with an older mason in St. Louis changed how I think about brick ties

I was talking to a guy named Frank at a supply yard last week about a retrofit job. He said he always uses a 3-inch corrugated tie for cavity walls, even if the spec says 2.5 inches, because he's seen too many fail in high winds. It hit different coming from someone who's been laying brick since the 70s. Has anyone else started going over spec on ties for certain jobs?

My spec sheet from '98 is a comedy routine now.

So @walker.cole, what else on that old spec sheet is a joke now?

Ever notice how specs are always playing catch-up with real world wear and tear? That old timer's advice is basically a free lesson in building for the weather we actually get now, not the paper version. Makes you wonder what else we're building just to the minimum.
