Just realized my take on chatting with clients about their design ideas splits the crew down the middle.

Half the guys say it keeps the job smooth, while the other half thinks it just invites last-minute changes; what's your view?

Man, my first freelance gig was basically a masterclass in why you talk early. I tried to be a mind reader, ended up redoing the whole homepage two days before launch. A little awkward chat up front beats a panic attack at the finish line every time.

Ugh, this argument is older than the comic sans font. I read this piece a while back about how not talking enough early on actually causes those nightmare last-minute changes. The logic was that if you don't ask the dumb questions at the start, you miss their hidden assumptions, and they only see it when the work is almost done. A little pain up front saves a ton later.

Seriously, talking it through too much just gives them room to second-guess everything later. You end up redoing work for free.
