I grouted my own shower niche with sanded grout for 3 years before a guy in Dayton set me straight
I used to think sanded grout was fine for everything. If it held up on floors, it had to hold up in a shower niche, that was my logic. Then about 6 months ago I was doing a small bathroom remodel up in Dayton and the homeowner asked me why her last guy's niche joints had cracked and turned chalky after two winters. I looked at it and it was sanded grout, same as I'd been using. I asked around and an old tile setter told me straight out that sanded grout in a wet niche is asking for trouble because it's too gritty to pack tight into those little 2 inch joints and water gets behind it. He said unsanded or epoxy only, no arguing. I went back and looked at a job I did in 2021 and sure enough, the bottom corner joints were already soft. I've switched to unsanded for anything vertical and narrow now, and I'm honestly a little embarrassed it took someone else's cracked shower to wake me up. Anybody else get taught sanded for everything and have to unlearn it?
