Everyone touts the 3-5-8 rule for brick ties but I think it's way too loose for modern framing.

Right, because gravity totally cares about your fancy engineering degree when that brick decides to lean.

Oh man, that's rough. Some people act like their sarcasm is a substitute for actual knowledge. I feel for you trying to have an honest technical discussion and getting that kind of response.

The 3-5-8 rule never accounted for engineered lumber and how much it moves compared to old growth framing. Modern OSB sheathing actually changes shape with humidity way more than people realize, throwing off those spacing numbers completely. Building science has shown that tighter tie spacing actually reduces cracking in brick veneer on these newer, more flexible wall systems.
