That "finally made sense" part is interesting, because it makes it sound like there's just one right way to do it. Isn't the cool thing about a string line that you can use it a few different ways depending on the job? I've seen guys use it for straight runs and others use it just to check for level every few feet. The trick that clicks is usually the one you need for your specific problem.

Try setting it up in a triangle for your corners, keeps everything square. That was the game changer for me.
