That Applebee's tweet everyone called a PR disaster was the only honest thing a brand put out that month
Back in May, Applebee's hopped on that whole trend of roasting your own menu and made a joke about their mozzarella sticks being microwaved. Everyone in this sub lost it calling it a crisis and demanding a public apology. I think people missed the point. The joke wasn't the company admitting the food is frozen. Anyone who has eaten there already knew that. The real screwup was them deleting it 40 minutes later and issuing some dry statement about how it "missed the mark." I ran a front desk for three years, and the one thing you learn is that saying sorry for a joke your own team approved makes you look way worse than the joke did. That half-baked apology turned a one day story into a two week one. Brands keep doing this and nobody seems to learn. What would you have done in their spot, ride it out or fold?
40 minutes. They caved in 40 minutes. That is barely enough time for the whole internet to even see the tweet, let alone get mad about it. Someone in that room panicked and hit delete before the joke even had a chance to breathe. If they had just left it up and said nothing, nobody would remember it now.
