PSA: Blew $300 on a wild PR campaign that backfired instantly

I dropped $300 on a sponsored post with a small influencer for my tree service, but she raved about how her neighbor's dead elm was "rustic decor" while I was pushing safety removals. Should brands risk humor to stand out, or stick to boring serious messaging? Has anyone else lost money on a campaign that just didn't land right?

Tbh that "rustic decor" comment is hilarious in hindsight but I feel your pain on the wasted money. Ngl I did something similar for my lawn care side gig last year. Paid a local food blogger $250 to promote my service and she ended up posting a picture of my truck with a caption like "this guy's mower is so loud it woke up my baby, but at least the grass looks nice!" Straight up disaster. People in the comments were joking about noise complaints instead of booking cuts. So yeah, humor can work but only if you control the punchline.

Oh jeez @jessica_hall49, that's rough. At least your blogger only woke up one baby, mine made the whole neighborhood think I was running a chop shop.
