Hit a thousand followers on my store's social media and got a death threat in the same week
Was tracking our hardware store's Instagram growth after we posted that video of the guy trying to return a half-empty can of paint from 1987. Hit 1,000 followers which felt huge for a small shop. Then someone commented saying our employee was a liar and they'd 'come down here and sort it out.' Had to report it and lock down the comments. The PR mess wasn't even our fault but we still had to post an apology saying we'd handle returns better. Wild what a little growth brings out.

The 1987 paint can thing is such a minor issue it's almost funny, but what gets me is how a tiny milestone like 1,000 followers suddenly made you a target. Idk if people realize that making death threats over store policy is way out of line, and honestly it says more about the commenter than your business. Maybe it's just me, but I bet half the people piling on were just looking for a fight and don't even shop at hardware stores. Your apology probably just fed the trolls more. Hope you kept that original post up though, because that video sounds hilarious and authentic.

Man, that's rough. Had a similar thing happen when my woodworking page hit 500. One guy got mad about a custom shelf price and threatened to leave a bad review everywhere. I just kept the comment up as proof we're real people dealing with real stuff, didn't take it down. People actually sided with us and the guy looked like a jerk.
