Picked the boring logo over the fun one in 2015 and I'm still second guessing it
Back when I ran a tiny coffee cart in Portland, I had to choose between a hand drawn logo that looked like a cartoon bean or a plain black text one. I went with the plain one because a designer friend said the bean looked cheap, and then nobody ever mentioned our brand again. Fast forward to now and the trendy places all use weird drawings, so I keep wondering if I picked wrong. Did anyone else kill a fun brand idea because one person said it looked bad?
The timeline doesn't really hold up here. Cartoon bean logos were already everywhere in 2015, Blue Bottle and Stumptown had that look locked down years before, so the "trendy places" didn't catch up to you, they were already there. Your friend's read on cheap was probably about the drawing itself, not the idea of a drawing, and a plain text logo on a coffee cart can work fine if the coffee's good.
