Pro tip: I finally caught a $2,500 "retainer" that was just an advance on my own content
Six months ago a skincare brand in Scottsdale sent me a contract with a $2,500 retainer clause buried on page 4, and I almost signed it. The catch was that the advance got paid back out of every post I made for them at a rate of 30 percent, so I was basically funding their ad budget with my own views. Has anyone else seen this kind of "retainer" wording, and did you walk away or try to renegotiate it?
Used to figure a retainer was a retainer and the fine print was just lawyer stuff to skim past. Then I read a contract like yours where the "advance" came straight back out of my cut, and now I read every page. Good on you for catching it before you signed.
