My neighbor Bob told me to skip the pre-emergent last spring and now my lawn is 70% crabgrass
He said it was a waste of money for our area but after walking my yard this morning I'm counting over 20 patches of the stuff and I'm kicking myself for listening to him - has anyone else had a neighbor's shortcut advice backfire on them like this?

Read an article in some gardening magazine that said pre-emergent is like sunscreen for your lawn, you gotta put it on before the UV rays hit not after. Bob probably meant well but neighbor advice is so hit or miss. My dad's friend told him to just overseed every fall and ignore the crabgrass, three years later his yard was basically a weed farm. I get being cheap but sometimes you just gotta spend the money or end up with a mess like this.

kim's right about the timing thing... Bob probably meant well but shortcut advice always ends up costing more in the long run.
