My kitchen faucet exploded at 6 AM and I just stood there frozen

Last Wednesday I turned on the taps to fill my coffee pot and the whole spray head shot off like a rocket. Water was blasting everywhere, hitting the ceiling and cabinets before I even thought to shut off the valve under the sink. I ended up mopping for 20 minutes with every towel I own. Has anyone else had a random fixture betrayal like that?

Oh, I know this feeling all too well. Our shower head did the same thing a couple years back, except it was during my morning routine and I was still half asleep. The whole assembly just cracked and came apart, water was hitting me in the face and soaking the bath mat before I could get it shut off. I had to replace the entire arm and the head because the threads had corroded. I still get jumpy when I turn that faucet on.

Man, @jamesm48 you hit on something real there with that jumpy feeling. I still brace myself every time I go to turn the water on, even after replacing the whole thing (went with a solid brass arm and a metal shower head, none of that plastic nonsense). You gotta check the pipe behind the wall too, if the threads corroded that bad on the outside, moisture might be getting in there and rotting the drywall from behind. I learned that the hard way, had to rip out a chunk of tile and it was a whole mess, so maybe just give the wall a quick poke while you're at it.

Buddy of mine had the same thing happen with his kitchen faucet. He went to grab a coffee cup and the whole spout just flew off, water shooting straight up to the ceiling before he could get to the shutoff valve under the sink. Took him forever to dry out the cabinets and he still flinches whenever he turns that handle on.
