I finally called out a loud eater at the library and it backfired

Last Tuesday at the Bothell library on 182nd, this guy was crunching chips so loud you could hear it from the DVD section. I walked over and asked him to keep it down, and he just stared at me and said, 'It's a public space, Karen.' Then someone else shushed me for making a scene. Has anyone else tried enforcing quiet rules and just made things worse?
