Finally gave the community garden plot a shot, zero regrets

I put my name on the waitlist for the Bothell community garden back in March, mostly to shut my neighbor up about it. Took 4 months to get a 10x10 plot and I figured it would just be weeds and squash bugs. But the soil was already prepped and the drip lines were set, so I tossed in some tomatoes and carrots in late July. Just pulled 12 pounds of carrots out of there last weekend, more than I've ever grown in my own yard. Anyone else find the shared tools shed worth the annual fee, or is it just me?

Carrots are a fall crop, so late July timing actually worked out perfect for you.

That "perfect" part is doing a lot of heavy lifting in my case. I planted them thinking I was somehow ahead of the game, only to realize I had no idea what I was doing with the soil prep. My carrots came out looking like tiny, sad, crooked fingers, probably because I forgot to loosen the dirt deep enough. So yeah, the timing was perfect, but my effort was about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. At least the rabbits had a good laugh at my garden patch. I'll try again next year, but honestly, I'd be happy if they just come out straight enough to call them carrots.
