Dropped $200 on a smart thermostat that made my heating bill go up
Was hyped to save on energy costs so i grabbed one of those learning thermostats last spring. Turns out it kept cranking the heat when i was at work 'learning' my habits or whatever. After 3 months my bill was $40 higher than last year so i ripped it out and went back to my old dumb one. Anyone else have a smart home gadget that actually cost them more?

Yeah, that "learning" part is a total scam. Mine started cranking the heat at 3 AM because it thought I liked it toasty while I was sleeping, but really it just kept misreading the schedule. It was like it was trying to outsmart itself. The old dumb thermostat just shuts off when it hits the temp and never tries to "learn" what makes me cozy. Feels like the thing was designed to sell more gas, not save you cash.

Hear me out, but is it really that big of a deal? I've got one of those learning thermostats and sure, it did some weird things at first, but I just turned off the learning feature and set it like a regular thermostat. It's not like it's purposely burning gas to spite you. Maybe yours just needed a reset or something.
