Update: separating haworthia pups after a 4 inch pot went root-bound

I waited way too long to break apart a crowded haworthia because I kept reading that offsets should stay attached until they hit a certain size, so I let it go until one pot had 9 pups jammed together and the whole thing tipped over on my shelf in Denver. What actually worked was a butter knife and a cheap pair of cuticle scissors I grabbed from Target, and the whole job took me 20 minutes after 3 weeks of putting it off. Does anyone here actually wait for pups to hit a certain size, or do you just pop them off when the pot starts bulging?
