Update: My neighbor said my garden looked 'wild' and it clicked
She meant it as a criticism, but I realized she only grows perfect rows of petunias. My patch of native milkweed and coneflowers is a buffet for local bees. Anyone else get judged for a 'messy' but helpful garden?

It's the same with people who spray every dandelion. They see a weed, but it's the first real food for bees in spring. We're trained to see neat lawns as good, even if they're dead zones.

You're right about dandelions being bee food, @blakem37. It's wild how a green lawn with no clover or flowers is seen as perfect, even though it's useless for bugs. My neighbor mows his the second a single yellow head pops up. What makes us value that empty green carpet over something actually alive?
