Rant: I thought native plant snobs were full of it, but they were right about my front yard

For years I rolled my eyes at the native plant crowd. My neighbor kept telling me to rip out my azaleas and put in milkweed and goldenrod. I figured he was just another hipster with a beard and a compost bin. Then last summer after that 3 week drought, my azaleas looked like crispy fried leaves while his native patch was still green and actually had butterflies. I spent $60 on some black-eyed Susans and switchgrass from a native nursery 20 miles away. They survived the winter without me doing a thing. Now my yard is the only one on the block that still looks decent in August. Anyone else cave on a gardening principle after watching it fail in real time?

My buddy Mark spent $200 on fancy hydrangeas that all died in July.

My azaleas bloomed fine through last summer's drought actually.
