PSA: That $200 'smart' soil sensor was a total waste for my garden
I dropped $200 on a fancy soil sensor system last spring that connects to an app and tells you exactly when to water and fertilize. Sounded great on paper but after 3 weeks the app kept glitching and the probe gave me readings that made no sense for my tomato plants. I went back to just sticking my finger in the dirt and watching the leaves for droop like my grandma showed me. Anyone else had better luck with those cheap moisture meters from the hardware store instead?

Lol those things are such a scam. I bought a cheap $10 one from the hardware store and honestly it works fine. Stick it in the dirt, get a reading, done. No app nonsense or random glitches messing up your plants. My tomatoes are thriving and I didn't have to deal with any tech headaches.

honestly i had the complete opposite experience with mine. i got the same type of smart sensor last spring and yeah the first week was buggy but they pushed a firmware update and it’s been solid ever since. i keep a little log and my tomato yield was almost double what i got the year before when i was just guessing based on leaf droop. not saying the cheap ones are bad but sometimes the tech pays off if you get lucky with a good batch.
