My neighbor has this old rose bush she calls her "gossip vine." She says every time she trims it, she remembers who gave her the cutting forty years ago. I mean, plants really do hold stories like that. My mom's tomato plants all came from seeds saved from her own mom's garden. It's not just dirt and leaves, it's a whole family history.
