My friend told me to stop watering my fiddle leaf fig so much
She said to only give it a cup of water every two weeks, even though it's a big plant. I did that for about a month and the leaves started getting brown and crispy around the edges. I went back to my old way of soaking it when the top soil gets dry, and it perked right up. Has anyone else gotten plant advice that just made things worse?

Yeah, that cup every two weeks thing is a classic case of bad advice getting passed around. It doesn't account for pot size, light, or humidity at all. Soaking it until water runs out the bottom when the top few inches are dry is way more reliable. Your plant told you what it needed.

Wait, people actually measure water with a cup? Honestly that sounds like a recipe for dead plants. My peace lily would throw a fit if I tried that. Tbh just sticking a finger in the soil is way easier.

Imagine trying to give your plants a measured cup of water like they're following a recipe. My spider plant would probably just pack up and leave. It's like saying everyone should drink exactly eight ounces of water a day, whether they're sitting on the couch or running a marathon. Plants have good days and bad days too.
